Rubies of Eventide Mining Guide, Hints and Tricks

Mining is the primary method of gathering crafting metal in Rubies of Eventide. The first 3 tiers of metal can be purchased from merchants which makes them well suited to low-level crafters seeking skill. Higher grade metals are only available from mining or the occasional mob.

An introduction to mining written by the ROE staff is available at An Apprentice's Guide to Crafting and presents the Rubies of Eventide official introduction to mining. Lore of Eventide presents this tutorial to guide miners on their path to grandmaster.

Mining

You must purchase your first point of skill in mining from your trainer. One should never purchase any additional mining skill from the trainer as you can gain skill through use. DP are finite, time to mine is not. Purchase your first point of skill in mining either during character creation or from the trainer in KB. Open up your character selection screen, find the mining icon and "drag" it to your speed bar. Head over to the kobold mines west of KB and have a talk with the mining merchant. He is your good friend and you will be interacting with him a lot. He can smelt your ore into metal and he will purchase all your junk rocks.

You can collect mining axes off the kobold miners in the mines or you can purchase them from the merchants. Low-level players often choose to kill kobold miners for their axes. Higher-level players frequently buy them. Either way, get yourself a half dozen mining axes, turn on the TV and prepared to be bored. Go stand next to the mining merchant there in the gravel pit and hit the button you have assigned to "mine" 100 times. You may have to move a few steps if you ever get the message that the location is over mined. Do not move too far, you don't need to and it only makes it take longer to get back to the merchant to sell your stones.

Many players discard the rocks, pebbles and boulders. I recommend you keep them when you are mining in the gravel pits. Remember, you do not even have to walk (waddle) to the merchant since you are mining right next to him. Mine until you are full and then sell all the rocks to the merchant. This should get you enough coin to buy your next axe. Keep mining until you have 99 bronze ore. Hand this to him and he will give you some bronze bars. You used to get 1 bar of metal for every 10 ore. Hence, when you give him 99 ore he will "give you the tenth since you are so close".

Recognizing your ore

Recognizing your ore is essential to rapid stacking. It is regrettable that Rubies of Eventide lacks something as basic as auto stacking of materials, but such is the way of things. The easiest way to recognize your ore is by how much experience you earn when you mine it. These numbers also correspond to the lore skill required to identify the ore. You can identify bronze ore with a lore of 1 but iron takes 10 lore skill and so forth. It is recommended you do NOT use the identify skill on your ore as identified ore and non-identified ore do NOT stack. It is pretty fast to stack based on the XP earned when you mine it combined with the icon of the ore. Bronze has its own icon, iron / steel / khalite share the same icon. Praxite has its own icon as does norium. You can right click the ore to bring up the description in the window if you did not catch the xp as you mined. Each of the ores has a unique description which can be used to aid stacking.

Refer to the table below for the list of ores, their unidentified name and identifiable traits.

Ore XP Weight Description
Bronze 1 10
Iron 10 10 dull grey metal ore
Steel 30 10 grey metal ore
Praxite 50 15 shining gold ore
Khalite 70 25 dark grey ore is almost black
Norium 90 50 rich, dark blue ore, that appears to glow.

Where to mine

There are a very limited number of places to mine in Rubies. The "mining maps" as they call them indicate what materials can be found in what mining locations. Beginning miners should start in the gravel pits right next to the mining merchant. They should stay there until they have 100-150 skill. Once you have 100-150 skill you can move up on the hill over the gravel pits. Being "on the hill" is the same as being in the mines without having to deal with any of the mob aggression. Just work your way high enough up on the hill to be "over" or "on top" of the mines and you will get the same yields as you would if you were in the mines. Stay there on the hill till you get to 300-350 mining skill.

Somewhere between 300 and 400 mining skill you can move to the scythe next up above kendal falls. Here you will start regularly getting praxite, gold ore and the occasional higher metal. Many people stay at the scythe nest till 500, though some folk are moving on around 450. Finding your "spot" on the wall of the scythe nest is an art. Different people say different spots have better yield. I for one have not seen it. Pretty much everywhere on the wall outside the nest seems to produce similar yields, as does inside the nest it self. Mining the scythe nest is where you pretty much have to discard your rocks or you will go insane trying to deal with all the junque. The long walk from the refiner suggests that you need to stay up at the nest for 6 to 8 hours of mining, potentially over several playing periods, to make the trip worthwhile. Use your gentry ring, a teleport scroll, have guild members shuttle the ore home or just waddle very, VERY slowly back to town. Miners with 150 conjuring skill may prefer to use the Miner's Portal spell.

The ultimate in mining pleasure these days is around Morkesh in silver lake. You will almost always find a miner hanging out there slaving over the burned out ground to dig up bones. Some report that the bottom of the lake playing dodge-ent is even better but my miner does not have enough levels to risk that venture, so I like most, stick to outside the castle. You can get a stack of prax ore in an hour and a half to two hours there on a good day.

Other places of note are the hills north of the birchwood inn, northwest of carthas, where you can mine up sulfur orbs. Not much else can be found there.

Mining in the graveyard can be interesting. You can dig up old jewelry and the occasional corpse. Giving those corpses to Harmon is a good way to ruin your reputation with him.

Beyond that there is not much to be found.
